Bullroarers, Infrasonics and Trance States

The bullroarer is an ancient ritual musical instrument that dates back to the Paleolithic period. It is a thin feather shaped piece of wood, which when whirled in the air by means of an attached string, creates a loud buzzing/humming sound or "call." Universally linked to thunder and spirit beings in the sky, these roaring sticks are probably the most widespread among all sacred instruments. In the mid-1980s, acoustic scientists determined that bullroarers produce a range of infrasonics, extremely low frequency sound waves that are below the human auditory threshold. Thunder, earthquakes, waterfalls, waves, drums, gongs, and chanting all generate infrasonics. These waves are picked up by the cochlea (labyrinth) of the ear and stimulate a wide array of euphoric, trance states.
